ACTION ALERT: OPPOSE SB/SJR 1238 Percentage of Elector Votes Required to Approve Constitutional Amendment or Revision, before Monday, March 1
Stop the attack on FL's ballot initiatives & citizen-led change! The Florida Legislature continues to disrespect the will of the people.
SJR 1238 (Rodriguez) Percentage of Elector Votes Required to Approve Constitutional Amendment or Revision is scheduled to be heard *Monday, March 1 at 4:00 pm ET* in the Senate Ethics and Elections Committee. This bill seeks to increase the percentage of votes required to pass citizen initiatives on election ballots from its current 60% to 66 & 2/3%, and if passed by the Legislature, would appear on the next general election ballot in 2022.
We need you to OPPOSE this bill because: -It seeks to build on momentum gained in last year's Legislative Session when a restrictive law (SB 1794 Constitutional Amendments) was passed that requires more signatures and less time to get citizen initiatives placed on the ballot. -It is another blatant attempt to thwart the will of the voters when it comes to bills the Republican-controlled Legislature refuses to even hear in committees, much less pass. -Passing citizen initiatives has been one of the only ways to let the public majority be heard with popular policies like restoration of ex-felon voting rights and an increase in minimum wage. -Republicans know that the recently passed minimum wage increase in 2020 would not have been successful if the percentage of votes required was set at 66 and 2/3%. It is consistent with their mantra of "if you can't convince them with your policies, suppress them."
Please contact the following Senators on the Ethics and Elections Committee before Monday and urge them to vote "NO" on this bill.
