A New District, A New Choice

For the people who call our county home, redistricting is about more than lines on a map. It is about how our community is represented, how our shared priorities are heard, and how we come together to shape the future of the place we live. Because of the new district lines, our county is now part of a much larger congressional district that brings together communities with different experiences, needs, and hopes for the future. That makes this election especially meaningful for all of us. The issues that matter in everyday life here at home, from roads and public services to economic opportunity, thoughtful growth, and the well-being of our neighborhoods, will now be part of a broader conversation. The new congressional plan was approved during a 2026 special session of the Florida Legislature and signed into law in May, and it now governs the districts in place for this election cycle.

One immediate result of that change is that Democrats in our county will have a primary election for U.S. House District 15. At this time, the two qualified Democratic candidates are Chris Irizarry and Robert People. For voters in our community, this is an opportunity to learn more about the people seeking to represent us, listen carefully to their ideas, and consider how each one would work to make sure our county’s voice remains strong in a district that now reaches far beyond our local boundaries.

Voters who want to learn more about the candidates can visit their campaign websites: Chris Irizarry at chrisforchange.com and Robert People at peopleforcongress.com. This primary is about more than selecting a name on a ballot. It is about taking part in the civic life of our community and choosing who will help carry our local concerns, values, and hopes into a district that is larger and more diverse than before. When neighbors stay informed, ask thoughtful questions, and take time to understand the choices before them, our community is stronger for it. This is a moment to pay attention, stay engaged, and make sure our county’s voice continues to be heard.
