CITRUS DEMOCRATS URGE THE CITRUS COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD TO FORGO IMPLEMENTING HB 931

Hernando, Florida. April 19, 2024  - Early this week, Florida’s Governor took our state one step closer to Christian Nationalism with the signing of HB931.  This legislation sets up a likely unconstitutional mechanism where local school boards can opt into creating rules that allow volunteer chaplains to provide support, services and programs to students.  Our local school board will be responsible for the additional administrative burden of managing this program, which includes managing that written consent is obtained from parents and that the school adheres to their choice of chaplain.

John Comer, Chair of the Citrus DEC said.  “From the earliest days of the founding of our nation, separation of Church and State has been a cornerstone of our national identity.  Indoctrinating our students into religion in our public schools under the guise of a counseling program is a dirty trick that will bring real harm to LGBTQ+  and students that don’t have Christianity as their faith.  We urge the Citrus County School Board not to implement a School Chaplain when the law goes into effect on July 1st.”
